If a domestic dog meets the following conditions, it will not carry the rabies virus.
- Domestic dogs and cats that reside indoors for a long time
- The origin of cats and dogs is clear, they are kept at home and have no experience of wandering around
- Dogs and cats have never been in contact with dogs suspected of rabies, and have not been bitten by dogs of unknown origin
- Pets have no signs of illness or abnormal behavior. When a person is bitten by a cat or dog, there is a reason for it, such as the owner forcefully pulling, teasing, protecting the pet’s food, children, or being hurt
- Pets have received effective rabies vaccines
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention informed that there has been no occurrence of rabies in the local area in recent years
- If bitten for more than 10 days, the dog and cat are still healthy as usual
Or refer to the ten day observation method
Ten day observation method: After being bitten by cats and dogs with disease symptoms or abnormal behavior with healthy cats and dogs, it is necessary to get vaccinated against rabies as soon as possible. At the same time, observe the dogs and cats that bite people. If there is no death due to rabies within 10 days, the person bitten can terminate the rabies pre vaccine injection. At the same time, it can be determined that the person bitten has not been infected with rabies at all, and this method can 100% rule out the possibility of human transmission of rabies.
What are the symptoms of dogs suffering from rabies?
- Low spirited, afraid of light and water. Once a dog is infected with the rabies virus, its spirit will become low, its eyes will be lifeless, and its reaction will become very slow, even if its owner calls it, it will not respond. And they are also afraid of water and light, and only like to stay in dark corners, unwilling to go out.
A great change in temperament. The most obvious manifestation of dogs suffering from rabies is a significant change in temperament. Originally gentle dogs will become irritable, aggressive, and want to bite people when they see them. Even the owner will become unfamiliar and will bite them. If you find that your dog has this symptom, whether it’s rabies or not, be sure to keep it locked to avoid it coming out and hurting people.
- Pupil dilation. If a dog is infected with rabies, its pupils will become large, and its eyes will become very strange, becoming very gloomy and looking listless.
- Difficulty swallowing and drooling. If you find that your dog has difficulty swallowing and its mouth cannot close, with saliva flowing, it is obvious that it has been infected with rabies virus, which has invaded the dog’s nervous system, so the dog cannot control its body.
- Convulsions throughout the body. Dogs infected with rabies may also experience convulsions throughout their body, but when such symptoms occur, most dogs are already experiencing organ failure. The rabies virus has already invaded the dog’s nervous system, causing stiffness in the limbs and convulsions throughout the body. Dogs with these symptoms will soon die.
- Appetite decreases until it is completely gone. When a dog is infected with rabies, its appetite will gradually decrease, and after a few days, it will become extinct, completely refusing to eat or drink. And this also indicates that the dog’s life is coming to an end.
